I, Norman Chigier, distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA; come to Aspen regularly to ski with the instructors on the Ajax slopes.
I noticed the Aspen Back Institute during one of my visits to the St. Regis, and stopped in to investigate. Founder and director, Clint Phillips told me about his vision of a first-class spine and wellness destination. A place where people could avoid surgery, seek honest opinions and undergo major improvements in quality of life which gave birth to the Aspen Back Institute at the acclaimed St. Regis Resort, Aspen.
Clint’s theory and concept was to stretch and strengthen abdominal and back muscles sufficiently to support and reduce the strain on the spine and vertebrae. Patients would receive intense, specialized and targeted stretching, strengthening and exercise for four to five hours, watching nutrition and resting the remainder of the day.
I observed patients who arrived crippled and aching with pain, with small hope of finding relief would spend the first week being exercised to engage their atrophied muscles within acceptable pain limits.
The range of motion on their limbs begins to improve after one week and accelerates during subsequent weeks of treatment. Ninety-five percent of the patients leave the institute after three weeks, transformed physiologically and psychologically. Providing that they maintain regular exercise training, their pain is substantially reduced and they are able to resume their normal lives. A “miracle” in which the faithful leave carrying their crutches.
At 73, I had been assured by all my doctors that I was in excellent physical condition, proven by an aggressive exercise campaign, including swimming and skiing, yoga and a careful diet for several years. However, when Clint assessed my range of motion, using a special back-crunching machine and detailed photographic analysis, the diagnosis was that my back performance was well below the statistical average of men in the age group from 60-80.
I was flabbergasted and ascribed his situation to fifty years bent over a desk in the perusal of books and papers.
After five hours a day of aggressive stretching, aided by Clint and his team, my spine musculature tested 19% stronger and I could touch my toes-something I did not think was ever possible. I understood that the exercises I learned at the Institute must be continued daily.
I brought my partner, Marilyn to the Back Institute for three weeks of treatment. Marilyn has endured years of pain from spinal stenosis and twisted vertebrae squeezing her disks. She found periodic relief through epidural spine injections and heavy doses of pain pills. She had given up tennis and golf, and before coming to Aspen she was hobbling with a cane; she had difficulty driving or even entering a car; she suffered intense and continuous pain in her back, hips and thighs. Tales from her friends, who were left crippled after unsuccessful back surgery made her fearful of undergoing surgery.
The first week of her treatment was critical: After a detailed diagnosis of the MRI taken of her back, and an assessment of her range of motion, a gentle exercise program was devised to strengthen her atrophied muscles. It was understood that this treatment would not be painless. And as was predicted by the staff – she had little relief from the pain in her back and thighs that first week; and in fact she had to tolerate the new aches induced by the treatment. Those first few days were extremely difficult both physically and psychologically. With a lot of encouragement from me and the team, Marilyn persevered. She appreciated the 95 degree pool where she practiced “water walking” after a day on the treadmill and the powerplate vibrator (to increase the bloodflow to her muscles), the stretching and balancing exercises with state-of-the-art-equipment, the chiropractor, massage therapy and the specially-fitted back brace. Most appreciated was the gentle and supportive treatment from Clint, Jaden and the other team members.
Marilyn returned to Pittsburgh after three weeks at the Back Institute. Her pain was greatly reduced; she no longer needed a cane. She was able to walk, climb stairs and smile again. Her family and friends agree that recovery has been remarkable. Marilyn understands that by continuing the exercise program devised for her she can look forward to a normal, active lifestyle without surgery.
